Column for August 17, 2006
Boy oh boy is it fall already? We got so hot for a few days and now it got cold
last night and it is still August. Back to school ads on TV, promos for Alice Cooper
at the State Fair, pumpkin pie, cider and donuts, trees turning color, no it is
all too soon.
August does mean Woodword Dream Cruise and yes my band is going to play there. We
may be the only band to have played at every dream cruise? I have found that I just
can't say my band is going to play there, I have to say "Benny and the Jets band"
is going to play there. So that when people do a search on "GOOGLE" for "Benny and
the Jets band" this column will pop up. Also I guess I can say going to play there,
I have to say Benny and the Jets band will perform at Shain Park in downtown Birmingham
Michigan, Saturday, August 19th from 4 till 6pm at the Woodward Dream Cruise. This
event is free and open to the public.
By the way when you GOOGLE, "Benny and the Jets" hopefully the
www.Bennyandthejets.com
site will pop up which has a play dates calendar page, photos, music, a bio page
that tells all about the band and a message board with all the past columns. Should
I even mention Bob Seger was on the
www.myspace.com/bennyandthejets?
PS don't be afraid of myspace it is a web on to itself and your kids are as safe
there as any bus stop in town.
Mr. Joe is turning into my live music reporter about town. A few columns ago he
reported on a band he enjoyed call Red Hill. Now Joe has come across a band called
Retrospect. Six guys, 3 guitars, a trombone, sax and drums. The band plays everything
from La Bamba to the Eagles and the B-52s. Joe says Retrospect also did a nice pure
instrumental version of the 1939 Glen Miller song "In the Mood."
I heard from Fidge and Roscoe who both were in the 70s Motown-Rare Earth recording
band the Sunday Funnies. Fidge still sings around town with his friends John and
Debbie and on occasion with Doctor Pocket at the area casinos. Roscoe mean while
has been playing drums for the Silver Canyon Band. Both e-mailed condolences when
they read last weeks column that mentioned the passing of musician Jeff Perry.
I could write a book about Joe Lagreci. He plays guitar for Jamie Coe's band on
Ford Road in Garden City. Also on Thursdays with Wally Gibson's Touch of the Blues
at Station 885 on Starkweather in Plymouth. His wife Lisa also sings with Jamie's
band and won the first WDIV singer of the year competition. Joe was sad to her of
the passing of local drummer Jeff Perry. Jeff performed in several area band including
Jamie's, Free Spirit and the Night Shift. Joe also sad to report about the recent
passing of fellow drummer Paul Molina aka Paul Anderson. Paul played in the bands
Tatiana and Monkey Cage.
