Column for August 10, 2006

How about this story. I was at the local coffee shop telling Sharon and Rob of Livonia that Benny and the Jets are playing Saturday at the historic Gallic Irish American Club on Michigan Avenue near the old Tiger Stadium. When they asked me, if I heard someone discovered oil in Livonia? They were not sure if it was found at Nakin Mills or Green Meade but the story is floating around town.

With the discovery of huge oil deposits in Livonia this not only would take care of all the local police and fire department needs, but should more then pay for all the schools, reduce every ones taxes and even ease the nations dependency on foreign oil.

Though I haven't been able to confirm this oil rumor we can only hope it is true and we are all not going to be part of some huge oil company cover up conspiracy.

Hmmm is it me or have you noticed an increase in summer colds? Maybe not colds but dry hacking coughs, people with bronchial problems that last over 10 days. Which is called pneumonia. My wife has it and been fighting it for weeks. I tell her it is the air conditioning. She tells me I am crazy.

The Doctor tells me, pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by different types of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Symptoms of pneumonia include cough with sputum production, fever, and sharp chest pain on breathing in. Pneumonia is suspected when a doctor hears abnormal sounds in the chest, and the diagnosis is confirmed by a chest x-ray. Bacterial and fungal, but not viral, pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics.

My friend Gino the Mailman, a Yankee fan, say's don't hold your breath but it is possible the Detroit Tigers could become the team with the most wins in baseball history. This from a team that a couple of years ago was flirting the most losses in history record. Gino reports the 2001 Seattle Mariners hold the current record of 116 regular season wins.

Tearaway Tom sent me a e-mail, he says, Ben audio books have proved a great way for me to at least partially solve the problem of "too many books and too little time." Acquiring them over the Internet has never been easier than through www.audible.com. Check 'em out and if you sign up, tell 'em "tearaway" sent you so I get a free book. Tom also runs an in depth radio show via the Internet Radio link on http://www.new-sounds.com.

I heard from Fred Lorenz, piano player for the Yankeeville band. Fred was sad to report the passing of Jeff Perry. Jeff was a great guy, a well known area drummer. Jeff played in several area bands including the Night Shift who played at Farwell and Friends on Middelbelt and Jamie Coe's band at Jamie's on 7 which used to be on Seven Mile Road across from Livonia Mall in Livonia.
