Column for July 19, 2006

Has anyone mentioned Steve Yezerman retired? We are a sports town. Some people even call us Hockytown. Yezerman was a great hockey player, a great ambassador to the game. One of the all time great Red Wings. Most people even go as far to call him the greatest captain of all time.

He was a winner and he will be missed. We have already heard team officials say they hope the team will make the playoffs next season. Did you catch that? Hope, the team will make the playoffs. We haven't heard the word hope used like that in a long time. We might hope they win the Stanley Cup, but we don't hope for the playoffs. The Red Wings often called the Yankees of hockey simply retool every off season and expect to win it all.

Even with the retirement of one of Detroit's all time sports stars, people around town are talking about Ben Wallace. Yes also a great player, a great ambassador to the game and one of the all time great Pistons. But Ben a different player then Steve, a different era and his time in Detroit just not meant to be. Still it may be possible Ben Wallace's new team, the Chicago Bulls could win a championship before our beloved Pistons.

I find it interesting you can be a great player and my never be a fan favorite. Fans by definition are fanatics. From American Idol to sports every once in awhile there is a magic connection between the fans and the stars. People latched on to Ben Wallace like few other basket ball players before him. Fear the Fro, for what every reason Wallace was the Piston people cheered.

We are a sports town. A hockey town, baseball town, yes basketball and maybe someday a football town too. WDFN radio located in Farmington Hills is celebrating their 12th year on the air as a 24 hours sports radio station.

Much of that 12 years JT the Brick has broadcast his top rated late night national sports show on WDFN 1130 on the AM dial. For many of them years I have called in as a passionate Detroit sports fan. In fact we now do a spot we call Hard Core Wednesday.

Last Wednesday I mentioned Detroit and our long sports history. The old Tiger Stadium where Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run. The fact that Detroit hosted last years All-Star baseball game. Last years Super bowl. We had the winningest team in regular season hockey. The winningest team in regular season basketball and currently the winningest team in all of baseball.

JT mentioned he felt many of the Detroit fans were just glad to winning. I said NO KIDDING after 10 years of the Tigers loosing we are glad we are not the worst team in all of baseball and as long as we are the BEST team in all of baseball we plan on enjoying the ride.

If that ride ends up with a home field American league World Series game at Comerica Park we will enjoy that too. Just like we did with Denny McLain in 1968 and Kirk Gibson in 1984!

I guess it is time to decide who our favorite 2006 Tiger is. Inge, Pudge, Polanco? Does it roll off the tongue like Trammel, Whitaker and Gibson?
