Column for June 15, 2006

It is 5am I am sitting at the computer. I am getting hungry and I need to get the column sent in. Looking over stuff on my desk. There is some info on cinnamon. I mentioned I am hungry. Cimmamon might help manage your cholesterol. According to research in Fitness magazine, one-forth to one-half teaspoon twice daily can lower blood sugar, triglycerides, LDL and total cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes. To put this into everyday use they suggest dipping bananas or berries in low-fat sour cream and then in a mix of one teaspoon of ground cinnamon and one-fourth of a cup of brown sugar. WOW I am ready to try that out right now.

I am not sure if we even have any cimmamon in the house. I like the idea of dipping bananas in the cinnamon or maybe even in my coffee, but I think I can live without the brown sugar. That can't be good for the calorie count.

More stuff on the desk, some info from Livonia Recreation Center, 15100 Hubbard Road in Livonia. They have a 42-foot-tall climbing wall designed to challenge climbers of all levels. I guess the thinking is I would be on the low level. The center offers classes that teach safety techniques. proper climbing gear and knot tying. Families and groups are welcome.

Assuming that I would be on the low levels of rock climbers reminds me of a time when I was in Hawaii. I went to that famous North Shore. Home to the biggest 20ft surfing waves. I couldn't wait to jump in. The life guards came running over and said no, no, this is for professional surfers. Surprised I replied what makes you think I am not.

Not one to give up I went further down the beach, jumped into a much smaller wave and did what is known as a washer machine. Got tumbled over and over, hit my head on the volcanic rock bottom, but lived to tell the story. LOL, in computer lingo that stands for Laugh Out Loud. Which is what I am doing. LOL again.

When I play in the band I often tell the story about the old Edgewater Park. It was a small amusement park on Seven Mile east of Telegraph. Not a big place like Cedar Point or Disneyland, but it had bumper cars, a thing called the Wild Mouse and an old wooden roller coaster that to this day was the scariest roller coaster in the world.

Lot of people love roller coasters, they search the world for that next great ride. Kind of like me looking for that great wave. I just recently heard about a $5 million splashy, new ride at a place called Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park in Muskegon. The Grand Rapids, cute name, is a 1,500-foot-long water ride. Hmmm mixes the thrill of a roller coaster with the fear of a giant wave, can't wait.
