Column for June 6, 2006

Humm Immigration is a hot topic. Last week I wrote about a e-mail I receved from Rock Harley lead singer for Rocks Gang. In his e-mail he mentioned an idea he thought would work for all the people who would like to come to America. He thought illegal immigrants who want to become U.S. citizens should first spend at least two years in the Peace Corps or Salvation Army. Then three years in the Army, Navy, Marines, or Air Force fighting for our country. Then at least one year working to help clean up this country, or serving the community. Then they have earned the right to Social Security, Food Stamps and Health Benefits, to be citizens.

This generated a lot of response maybe because it was Memorial Day weekend? But most people seem to agree at least in part. Several people e-mailed to say they forwarded the column to their senators, some sent it to the governor, even the president. But at minimum they talked about it. Many people would like a safe legal way for people to be part of this country.

And yes. I did get several e-mails saying this country is not American. We are the United States. Seems some gal at the Michigan School Board wants to out law the use of the word "America" and "American" in our schools. This will not doubt go over well with the red blooded Americans I know. But I guess technically we are the United States of American. the continent we are in is North American. There is also South American, Central America and I guess they want to call themeless Americans. Hmm if they can why can't we?

I did have a hard time going over the border to Canada. The border guy asked what country are you from. I said American. He said NO, you must mean United States. I said OK what ever. Then he asked the guy with me, what country he was from? He said U.S. Eh. This of course did not make the boarder guy happy. Now days you don't want to make them guys mad. They think they are a little more important then they are. We said hey we'll just go home, They said not before we give you some more hard time.

Another great idea some American came up with. Soon, to go to Canada, the Bahamas or anywhere outside the United States we will have to have a passport. This on its own doesn't seem like such a bad idea. When I went to England I had to get a passport which must have cost me about $17 but now the new passports are going to cost closer to $100. So the American family of five wants to go to Windsor for lunch or to show some visiting relatives and not only will it be a pain at the boarder but painful in the wallet too.Eh.

If I look at the Benny and the Jet Band calendar which is on the web site I see we are going to be at John Cowley's on Grand River on Thursday. The Turtle-lake.com NUDE car show Saturday, June 10.
