Column for June 1, 2006

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the show. Or in this case the column. Yours truly loving life and springing into summer. Interesting idea, I went to Steve and Berry's, that cheap clothing chain store in the mall that sells everything for $6.99 and bought a 50s stile varsity jacket. I like it. It makes me feel good and anything that helps you smile or gives you a chuckle can't be all bad.

NBA play-offs in full swing. I watch MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and notice he resembles my favorite Livonia singer Arlen Viecelli. Many remember Arlen from his days in the Salem Witchcraft Band.

Plenty going on around town this time of year. Spent last Saturday at the Recreation Leisure Corp. Headquarters on Grand River. RLC which sells motorcycles, parts, clothing and accessories, had their Scooter Party. Games, contests, hot dogs and the Scooter Trash motorcycle stunt team. WOW these guys could make their cycles dance. You might see some photos and info at www.scootertrashst.com.

Monday I got a call from G1NBC.COM they were filming an event at the A&W on Grand River just east of Orchard Lake Road. What an event, cool cars, models, TV stars, Elvis Sherman Arnold, Rocks Gang, girls in poodle skirts serving Papa Burgers. I fit right in with my ZZ Top Beard and varsity jacket.

There was a classic car named Sha-Boom. This pearl white classic with blue flames painted on the hood actually blew real flames out the tailpipe. Nothing lights up the crowd at A&W like a car blowing flames our the rear end. Sherman Arnold did a great job entertaining the crowd. Seems everyone loves Elvis. Rock Harley lead singer from Rocks Gang took everyone back to the 50s singing everything from Great Balls of Fire to Mack the Knife.

Rock not only a singer but a thinker. He pulled me aside, said he loves the column always reads it. He agreed with me people should be more upset with the price of gas and the indecent profits gas companies were making. And on the immigration topic he thought illegal immigrants who want to become U.S. citizens should first spend at least two years in the Peace Corps or Salvation Army. Then three years in the Army, Navy, Marines, or Air Force fighting for our country. Then at least one year working to help clean up this country, or serving the community. Then they have earned the right to demand Social Security, Food Stamps and Health Benefits, to be citizens.

On the surface that might seem extreme, but when I thought it over it was almost genius. So many people want to American. Why not open the door to people who are willing to serve the country. Anyone who spent some time in the Army or Peace Corps would be saying they are willing to be part of the solution not part of the problem. They would learn the American way of life. They would earn the benefits of American life and their volunteering would help improve the country they want to be part of.
