Column for April 27, 2006
Your not going to believe it because
I don't even believe it. As I sit here on the computer typing the column not once
but twice just as I finish the column some computer glitch eats the column and
I have to start over.
I was writing or maybe moaning might be the better
word about the price of gas. Something I have done many times in this column.
But with gas approaching $3.00 per gallon and $4.00 around the corner I am madder
then ever and still not sure what to do about it.
I still believe you
have to drive across the street to the cheapest station. Not because you are going
to save a great amount of money but with supply and demand stations monitor gas
volume. If volume goes down they adjust accordingly.
It will be interesting
to see if the 400 million dollar bounce the head of Exxon/Moble received will
affect the price of gas at the pump.
I see DaimelerChrysler and the City
of Farmington Hills have formed a partnership as part of a larger fuel-cell project
to test the vehicles. Farmington Hills employees will use the vehicle for short
trips near the city. Data is automatically uploaded to a DaimlerChrysler computer
so engineers can track its use and catch any problems. Interestedly hydrogen fuel-cell
engines produce zero emissions.
I have a collectors edition Western Flyer
Pee Wee Herman type bicycle for sale on consignment at Recreational Leisure Corporation
on Grand River. I have driven by their building for years and never knew they
were there. Grand River at Orchard Lake Road there is a Flagstar bank on one conner
and a car wash on the other. Right next to the car wash the big RLC building.
Bikes, scooters and motorcycles maybe part of the answer for some people.
I talked to Glen Michrina who works at Recreational Leisure which by the way is
open to the public and sells all kinds of stuff. Parts, tools, clothing, boots,
gloves, custom T-shirts, leather jackets, accessories for snowmobiles, motorcycles,
mini-bikes, go-carts and even lawnmowers. Glen said it is not unusual for motorcycles
to get 50 or more gallons per gallon of gas. Small scooter can get 100 miles per
gallon.
I wanted to mention Glens dad Ray who in the 1959 pretty much
invented the mini-bike. Guys my age fondly remember the Lill' Indian mini-bike.
Ray Michrina still works the store everyday. He loves to talk motors and racing.
He also spends a lot of time promoting the city of Farmington. You can read the
mini-bike story on line at www.recleisure.com.
I heard from Millie Felch who knows a lot of people in the entertainment and
radio industry. She mentioned Motown guitarist Dennis Coffey will be recording
a new CD at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. For more information see www.denniscoffeysite.com.
Also agent and rock promoter Joe Peraino's son Mike Peraino has a band called
Silent Hero. The band will be performing at the Bull Frog on Telegraph north of
5 mile see myspace.com/silenthero for more information.
