Column
for April
6, 2006
Don't tell me people are picking up this paper to see what I am eating this week. I talked to Bob who picks up his Gazette at Mayberry's restaurant and he said several
people were talking about the day old, cold, Chinese food column.
I did get several e-mails people telling me how to microwave Chinese. They said
get a spray bottle give it a nice mist and heat on high for three minutes. Haven't
tried it yet but sounds like a good suggestion.
When is the last time you make Cream of Wheat? Me too. I read if you eat oatmeal
everyday it will lower your cholesterol. So I thought I would make some oatmeal.
Of course I go to the shelf and all we have is Cream of Wheat. So you put three
little spoonfuls in a half a cup of milk, nuke it for one minute and stir.
I stirred it and it still looked like milk. How is this going to thicken up? I stirred
and stirred, put it in for another minute and darn if it didn't thicken right up.
Though didn't taste near as good as my kids Cookie Crisp cereal. Which is really mini chocolate chip cookies in a bowl of milk.
What we eat, what we should eat, and what we want to eat, that is the question.
Don Shula was a famous football coach for the Miami Dolphins who liked to eat steak.
Now days Mr. Shula is famous for his nation wide chain of steak house restaurants.
We have a Shula's on Big Beaver, east of I-75 in the Troy Marriott Hotel. They are
famous for the 48 ounce Certified Angus Beef porterhouse ($69.95), that stands close to 4 inches thick.
Diners who finish it become members of the 48-Oz Club, 2500 people have finished
that piece of meat at the Troy location alone. Menus are hand painted on regulation
footballs, each personally autographed by the coach. Servers bring them to the table
on real kicking tees. The word is lunch menu is a good deal and the 22-ounce cowboy
steak, a bone-in rib eye, is by far the best-tasting steak in the house.
My band has been
very busy Tuesdays we play the Wayne Road Pub in Westland. Wednesdays
Silky's in Kiernan's Steak House, West Dearborn. Thursdays John Cowleys in Farmington.
Fridays Tita Si Filipino and American restaurant in Garden City, in the K mart shopping
center. Saturday the Gallic Irish American League, in Detroit just west it the old
Tiger Stadium. You can always call the Benny and the Jets Band hot line for directions
and more information 313 730 1627.
Last week we played at the Jeff and the Atlantic's reunion, held at the old Wayne
Ford Civic Center in Westland. What a great time was had by all. Probably 500 people
danced and reminisced the night away. Highlights included many of the original Atlantics
performing on stage with people like Cathy Garcia, Ronda Koch, Dennis Charles, Candy
Foster, Rocky Barra and Gino Washington. Gino had the hit record "Gino is a Coward"
back in the 60s. Jeff and his band played the back up on that recording. Former
Atlantic drummers Dave Berryhill now plays in the Over Easy band. Harry Rodman in
the Bluescasters. Bass Player Mike Fisher has a son in a band called Crop Circle.
