OK, I am sitting at my computer after getting home from my band gig at the Woodland
Bowl on Plymouth Road in Livonia. It is 6am. I am hungry. I have 223 e-mails and
I need to write a column.
Lets start with hungry. Hmm some left over Chinese food I can put in the microwave.
A e-mail about Buba the Love Sponge. I guess he is somehow connected to Howard Stern
and his new Serious Satellite radio network. A e-mail that wants me to sit in my
car at lunch time with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars to see
if they slow down.
Here is a e-mail from Oceans 11 bar on Farmington Road in Livonia, they want me
to start playing there on Thursday nights. I better save that one. A e-mail about
some girls and a can of Mountain Dew. Why do we have computers and why can microwave be so hot in spots and cold in others?
I got a couple of e-mails that mentioned the passing of Wilson Pickett. The former
Detroit soul singer died at age 64 suffering a heart attack. I know from doing the
WPON.com radio show, Wednesdays at 5pm with DR
Franklin, that Pickett was in a Detroit band called the Falcons. Which featured
Eddie Floyd, Sir Mac Rice, Joe Stubbs and Pickett. Later he recorded "Mustang Sally"
and "Midnight Hour." He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
Got a e-mail about Johnny Bassett. A tribute to the local blues great is planned
for February 12 at the New Dodge Bar 8850 Jos. Campau, Hamtramck. Friends will gather
to honor the guitarist who recently celebrated his 70th birthday. A limited edition
of Bassett's first CD, will be available. The show will start at 5pm and is open
the public.
I got a e-mail from female guitarist Lemon James. She enjoyed hearing about the
Gala Bistro, hidden in downtown Farmington. Something about wild mushroom risotto,
madiera-truffle essence and chives. Roast fingerling potatoes, herbed artichokes
and sweet peppers. While I choke down 2 day old Chinese.
I am excited about my friend JT the Brick coming to town for the Superbow festivities.
Things start out Saturday night February 4, at the Ferndale Superbowl Blues Festival.
We will be at the Elks Club stage, 22856 Woodward Avenue Ferndale. The night will
feature MC/Fox Sports Radio host, JT the Brick from LA, DJ John B., and Benny and the Jets band.
Then Sunday we run down to the Motown Winter Blast. 2pm we will be at the Rock Stage
outside
Ford Field doing pre-game before Stevie Wonder. Then it is off to the Gallic Irish American Club, 2062 Michigan Ave, Detroit. All three shows are free and open
to the pubic.
