Column for November 3, 2005

Hmm we are paying close to double the price for gas we used to pay just a few years ago. With gas prices the way they are it might have only been a few months ago. My friend Gino the mailman and I went to the White Castle and see they quietly doubled the price of their coffee. Now it is true White Castle used to have the best deal in town on coffee, A large coffee was only 40 cents, now it jumped to 80 cents and while that my not break the bank, I don't like how they kind of sneak them price increases in.

Northwest Airlines quietly doubled the fees it charges customers who buy tickets through its toll free telephone reservation center and at the airport ticket counters too. The fees increased from $5 to $10 at the call-in and from $10 to $20 if you go to the ticket counter. This is a fee to buy their product, would White Castle charge a fee to buy coffee at the drive through and maybe a higher fee at the counter? Geez I better not give them any ideas because I think they would if they could get away with it.

Being able to get a way with it, is not the American way or at least it didn't used to be. But so many companies are pushing it to the limit. How much can we squeeze out of everyone from the customer to the worker to the retiree and the stock holders too.

We have seen it happen to company after company. You can bet it is happening to a lot of people we don't see. Delphi is putting the squeeze on all its workers and retirees too. When in reality that is GM. What was the worlds largest company knew they were going to have problems with workers, health care and pensions so they spun off Delphi, to let them do the dirty work. It might be legal, but it is not right and not what I remember as being the American way.

More than 1000 Detroit Diesel retirees filed a federal class-action lawsuit against that company. Hmm GM might be involved in that deal too? The suit claims Detroit Diesel broke a promise to pay retirees medical expenses for life. I hope they win. If you make an agreement you should have to honor it.

When a company goes out of business the top people should not get treated better then the bottom people. K-marts goes bankrupt, workers loose their jobs, stockholders loose everything and the CEO gets 14 million dollars and guaranteed health care for life.

NAFTA lets car companies do more business over seas have we seen the price of cars lower?  Nike shoe closes all its American factories to take advantage of low cost foreign labor and who gains? I haven't seen the cost of the shoes come down. Just the big wigs at the top are squeezing out more money for themselves. It is just squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, push, push, push, cheat who you can, as hard as you can and try not to get caught.
