Column for October 27, 2005

Here's a little song I know, I sing it every where I go. Don't worry, be happy! I have written many times, life is not easy, often you have to work at being happy. It may be your most important job in life to be happy. Important for you and the people around you.

If you can be happy for one hour, you can look back at your day and say you had a good hour. Extend that to a day and you have had a good day, which can turn into a good week. Happy brings more happiness.

Kind of the message my new favorite TV preacher Joel Osteen has on his late night or is that early morning TV show. His nondenominational Lakewood Church, with the nation's largest congregation, moved into the Compaq Center, once the home of the Houston Rockets basketball team.

Osteen's church is listed by several sources as America's largest and fastest-growing congregation, Lakewood Church has approximately thirty-thousand attendees every week. Millions more watch Osteen's messages as they are broadcast on national and international television networks. All this and he doesn't ask for money and doesn't really preach.

Osteen has a New York Times Bestseller called "Your Best Life Now." He talks about living a better life, about being happy and successful. In seven easy steps.

One; He starts by telling people to enlarge their vision. To look at the bigger picture. Not to let the morning traffic jam ruin the rest of the day.

Two; People need to develop a healthy self-image. Don't look at yourself as old and fat. Find a good point and start with that.

Three; Discover the power of your thoughts and words. If you go around saying what a looser you are, people start to believe you. Maybe worse, you will believe it.

Four; Let go of the past. The past is the past you can't change what has happened, you can work on today and tomorrow.

Five; Find strength in adversity. Every tuff challenge is going to make you a better and stronger person.

Six; Live to Give. Never miss an opportunity to do a good deed. I really like that point, I have it written on a sticky pad over my computer. If your feel bad you will be surprised how giving can make you feel better. And good deeds do make for a better world, one deed at a time.

Seven; Choose to be Happy. It really is a choice. I can't tell you how many people I see everyday moping around feeling inadequate and unhappy. Start over find something you enjoy and build on that. Be happy. You can see Joel Osteen October 27 and 28 at the Place of Auburn Hills for more information see the web site www.joelosteen.com.
