Column for October 29, 2005

Maybe it's the time of year? The controversy at the Wonderland Mall? The price of gas, or all the natural disasters, but people seem to be having a hard time. People are cranky, rude, not patient or polite. People are driving worse then usual, switching lanes for no reason, fighting for that parking space. And yes, stores already have Christmas stuff out, this year well before Halloween.

I don't have the answers. I too, have to remind myself everyday to try to smell them roses. To be polite, maybe open the door or let someone go ahead of me in line. Any little thing to try to make the word a little better place.

I went to Taco Bell, asked the young lady if they had coffee, she had to check but said they did. I told her I would like two tacos and a small coffee with cream. She brought me a coffee and walked away. Then the manager comes over and asked if I was waiting for cream? I told her I was waiting for my order. Then she asked what did I order? So I had to repeat two tacos a coffee with cream. Then the managers says she must not have put the order in. Then rang up two tacos and a coffee. Then she asked did I want cream with that coffee? That was it, I hate incompetence. How many times can I say two tacos a coffee with cream. NO, I said, second thought I will go somewhere else.

I didn't get mad, but the encounter didn't make me feel good. I don't want to be, or add to the unpolite, non patient, rude, cranky people of the world. Just get me a coffee with cream, please. And I will try to smell some roses.

Recently driving down Michigan Avenue, I didn't smell any roses, but was shocked, yet still somehow pleasantly surprised, to see the wildest, short mini skirt, high boots, see thru clothed, only in the movie type, ladies of the evening working. Not one or two, of the normal Michigan Avenue type, but dozens and dozens of "Girls Gone Wild" "Mardi Graw" type. Seems Michigan is being invaded by displaced ladies of the evening. Places like New Orleans, famous for the ladies, who because of the hurricane now have to seek employment elsewhere, have picked the "Cool Cities" of Michigan. With the events like the Superbowl coming to Michigan what better place to work!

Also under the topic if hurricane relief, musician John Columbo of the Legacy Band is promoting benefit concert at JR's on Palmer Road, north of Michigan Avenue and just east of Merriman. The October 9 show will kick off at 3pm and feature 9 nine bands including Legacy, Stiletto, Eloise, Big Fatty featuring Marco Rigatoni, The DTs, and Wailen and Friends. The money raised will go to the Salvation Army. JR's is a great place, recently remolded, open seven nights with big screen TVs for sports fans, live entertainment and good food.
