The
last few weeks it seems like I have really been ripping on the library. Maybe
I should apologies because it is not the library I am against, It is taxes.
I like libraries. I think
the people who work at and run the library are great people and do a fantastic
job. The library has just become a topic of conversation because they like everyone
else want more money via more taxes.
Every product,
every company has value, they have to balance value with cost. Some companies
and products are not worth the cost. Much easier to say a Quater Pounder is not
worth it's cost then a library, but anything that involves money has to show corresponding
value. Then in free enterprise you have supply and demand. If a Quarter pound
hamburger is not a good deal, demand goes down and either the price goes down
or the product is discontinued.
When government and
taxes is involved there is to often a blank check mentality. Who cares how much
it costs just pass the bill on to the tax payer. That in part is why tax payers
love the Headlee Amendment. It said that's it you have enough money from now on
you get more money based on cost of living and inflation but not a bigger percentage
of our income. Live with it you cannot just say more more more.
The
city of Novi is considering selling naming rights. Individuals or businesses could
have arenas, parks or even libraries named after them. In 2003 Charles and Myrtle
Walker donated $1 million to the Novi Public Library which has been renamed the
Charles and Myrtle Walker Public Library of Novi. Walker also pledged an additional
$1 million match money if the library could raise another $1 million. If the library
did like many collages do and put that money into an annuity there could be millions
of dollars generating extra income for years to come.
I
would rather call Comerica Park, Tiger Stadium or the Max Fisher Symphony
Hall, the Detroit Symphony Hall but if Charles Walker can help the library
and lower my taxes I would gladly call it the Charles Walker Library, arena, park,
play ground, gazebo, street or anything else he would pay to have his name on.
I
have been so tied up in taxes, money and libraries I haven't mention much entertainment
lately. Hmm the libray did recently host the Candy Band. A very successful and
family friendly entreatment event. Also going on around town is the Motor City
Music Conference. We can only hope it was as successful as the library event.
The
Music Conference idea is not new they are held around the world. The idea is to
showcase bands, brainstorm and network. With 400 bands at over 40 Detroit venues they
freely mention names like Bob Seger, MC5, Emenem, Kid Rock and the White Stripes though I
don't think they pay the $15, $40, $60 or $100 admission price? For More info
