Column for October 28, 2004
I don't claim to have all the answers, often I can't even find the questions, but maybe a few observations.
Sex, drugs, taxes, politics, money money money. Hypocrisy on the left, hypocrisy on the right. We are so goodie goodie we don't want drinking, gambling, big signs, neon lights, and 24 hour cities, unless there is a buck to be made.
Governor Granholm say's vote no one proposal 1. She wants to make sure we keep getting lotto gambling money. Something like 600 million for the schools. You would think with that 600 million and the school taxes I pay they would be rolling in dough.
Lets cut down on drunk drivers. Lets lower the blood alcohol legal limit. Lets get more cops to give more tickets and bigger fines. Hey lets keep the cars while were at it and at the same time lets figure out some loophole so our fine cities can get more liquor license so we can have more bars, more places to drink, more ways to scam some tax money.
Under legislation introduced earlier this month, Michigan cities with redevelopment projects under way could reap more on premise liquor licenses then are currently allowed under state law.
Farmington Hills Mayor Vicki Barnett and Granholm think Farmington Hills is good at attracting people and business but the city needs to be able to retain those folks after work hours. To hang out, to drink, to spend money, to help develop them new cool cities. I guess drinking, gambling and women, can make any city cool.
With this new legislation Farmington Hills and most any want-a-be cool city will be able to have more places to drink. While slot machines and full fledge casino gambling may or may not become available, many bars currently have Las Vegas style Keno. This Keno gambling is a lot of fun and a real money maker for the state too.
Drugs, flu shoots, supply and demand, someone screws up creates a shortage of the flu vaccine, demand goes way up, everyone pays more. Someone is making money. And when did Farmer Jack get involved and how did they become the place to get your shot?
Gee that reminds me I wanted to write something about the President of the United States of America wanting to come to Farmington Hills to talk to the people. But believe it or not, there is a local ordnance against that, so he had to go to Oakland University. I guess you can somehow get around the ordnance there?
Also wanted to mention a lovely lady named Essie Haney who recently turned 104. She lives at the Sunrise Assisted home in Farmington Hills. I hope someone can take a copy of the paper to her and thank her for being part of our community and wish her all the best.
