Column for October 21, 2004
Time flies when you are having fun. Halloween around the corner, the holiday season soon to be upon us. In fact many of the area stores already pulling out holiday stuff. I like to encourage people to participate in Halloween. So many people in my neighborhood just turn off the lights and close their doors. They miss a great opportunity to meet their neighbors to get young kids involved in the community.
Turn the lights on bright, introduce yourself, participate, who knows you may meet some interesting people and make the world a better place. If you haven't been invited to a Halloween party Benny and the Jets band along with the Razorback band will perform Sunday, October 31 Halloween night at the famous All Around Lounge on Ecorse Road west of Telegraph Road in Taylor Michigan. Lots of fun, games, contests, dancing good times for all. I should mention the $500 cash costume prize for best costume, sexiest costume and best couples costume.
Sports, we love sports. Michigan is a great place for sports lovers and this is a great time of year for sports fans. Plenty of high school and collage football, major league baseball play-offs, the Lions seem to be much improved. I have even seen some of the worlds greatest hockey players hanging around Farmington Hills ice rings, since there is no professional hockey during this lockout season.
Can't talk about sports and not mention the world champion Detroit Pistons basket ball team. I went to he opening preseason game against the Boston Celtics. Pistons won 105 to 103 but is was a tuff game. Coach Larry Brown was happy to get a win but he is not about to sit still and let the team not play the right way. His way, defense first.
The team will be strong with the starting line up in tact. Several new guys off the bench. The challenge will be staying focused with the rest of the league gunning to knock off the champs. One other interesting item last year on the opening game they showed pictures of the team stars on the big screen over the basketball court and you would see Ben Wallace or Rip Hamilton, this year you see worlds champions. They somehow look different, no longer just players, they now are the best players, they are the champions.
