Column for September 30, 2004
Ladies and Gentlemen, he has played coast to coast with Benny and the Jets band, appeared with people like Bo Diddley, Mitch Ryder and Eddie Money, you have seen him on TV, heard him on the radio, on the sides of abandoned buildings and yes right here in this weekly column. Can we have a nice round of applause for the one and only Ben E. Jet.
Thank you, thank you. Yes, boys and girls in the card game of self promo if Howard Stern is the King, I would like to think I am at least the 3 of Hearts. I pick the #3 because it sounds lucky and Hearts because I like to think that I care. I care about old people with nothing to do. I care about young people who don't know what to do.
I care about hard working people who do there best to make it in a pretty tuff world. Guys like the pizza dude who delivers pizzas from 4pm till midnight. Then delivers donuts to all the 7-11s and area party stores from 2am till 9am.
I care about the cook who works a 10 hour night shift. Seven days a week. I care about the single mother who tries to work full time and find a baby sitter for her kid. I worry about the kid trying to grow up at day care while his mother tries to make ends meet.
In this world, in this country, you are supposed to be able to work hard and become successful. Along the way try to do the right thing, not lie, kill or cheat. And like my favorite Sunday morning TV preacher says be grateful for the things that you have.
Be grateful you have a job, a car, a kid. Grateful you can see, read, work and can take care of yourself. At the same time remember part of being successful is being happy. Often happy doesn't just happen. Sometimes you have to work at being happy. No one can be successful if they are not happy.
I am just a guitar player in a rock in roll band. I am happy I get to write this column. To interconnect with so many people. Still I need to cross promote more. When the band plays I need to announce I write this column.
When I write the column I need to tell everyone about the WPON am1460 radio show I do with DR. Franklin every Wednesday from 5 till 7pm. and the show later that night on WDFN am1130 with JT the Brick.
I could mention that Joe Hamma does a WPON show at 7pm on Tuesdays sponsored by Dave's Muffler shop on Michigan Avenue in Wayne. And sports fan Ron Cameron is back with a show 5 till 7pm on Fridays.
To Contact Ben E. or to find out where his band is playing call (313) 730-1627 or e-mail benejets@aol.com and see the web sites Bennyandthejets.com and reverendguitars.com.
