Column for March 18, 2004
For years my pet peeve has been no Michigan Rock and
Roll bands were in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in lovely Cleveland Ohio.
I know several Motown artist were in, even Bill Haley and Del Shannon. But I
am referring the Rock Era, as in Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, MC 5, Iggy, Mitch
Ryder, Rear Earth even Grand Funk Railroad. Yes, all somehow over looked and
snubbed when it came to being inducted to the Hall of Fame.
Very hard to imagine a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without Ted Nugent and Alice
Cooper. Noting that at one time, Grand Funk Railroad was one of the biggest
bands in the world.
Finally our own Bob Seger has been inducted and believe it or not, our own Governor
Granholm has jumped on board. In celebration of Bob Seger's induction into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm proclaimed March 15,
"Bob Seger Day" in the state of Michigan.
"Bob Seger has established himself as a true American and Michigan classic,"
said Granholm. "He found his place in history, and it's well deserved. Seger
is the unmistakable voice of Michigan rock & roll and a treasure to our state."
Seger inducted by Kid Rock on Monday, March 15, at the 19th annual induction
ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Other inductees this year
included Jackson Browne, the Dells, George Harrison, Prince, Traffic, and ZZ
Top. The edited version of the ceremony is scheduled to air on VH-1 on Sunday,
March 21, at 8 p.m. EST.
If you are looking for some old time rock and roll locally, Benny and the Jets
still perform every Sunday at Jamie's on Ford Road in Garden City. I think we
will put together some kind of Bob Seger tribute night, no cover, free pizza
and lots of Seger songs. This might be as good as time as any to mention we
have redone the "http://BennyandtheJets.com"
web site. It now features information on how to hire the band for your club,
school, church, festival or back yard party, a message board, band bio page,
photo page and a new product page with CDs, hats, Benny Bears, T-shirts and
all kinds of cool stuff.
